racism is a team sport but are we winning

Racism has historically been a central tool in the systemic oppression of Black people, shaping social, economic, and political structures to maintain inequality. This reality has forced Black communities to navigate a complex landscape where exclusion and discrimination are ever-present. However, looking at other ethnic groups such as white, Asian, and Hispanic communities, there is evidence that solidarity within these groups—combined with cultural pride and economic empowerment—has been an effective method to build stronger, more resilient communities. These groups have often leveraged their cultural identity to create thriving local economies, attracting tourism and business investments based on the unique cultural experiences they cultivate, turning cultural celebration into economic strength.

The notion of “if you can’t beat them, join them” suggests an alternative strategy for Black communities to consider: building economic and cultural power from within rather than continuously reacting to external oppression. While the fear of violence from white mobs and racially motivated attacks is a painful and very real part of history, it’s rooted in an era that does not fully reflect today’s social and technological advances. Modern medicine, technology, and community resources provide an unprecedented foundation for Black communities to develop healthy, self-sustaining societies. By fostering pride in culture, investing in local economies, and asserting solidarity, Black Americans can redefine power and resilience in ways that resist oppression without relying solely on confrontation with historically oppressive forces.
